New Literacies:
In today's world where technology is advancing so fast the form of education has to be modified as well. Teaching with pens, oencils, and books does not work anymore, we need to advance our education. New literacies is the introduction of new ways of educating this generation including technology in the curriculum. There are many view as to what new literacies properly mean. The many opinions can be summarized into four concepts; firstly there are many strategies and skills that must be learned to be able to navigate all the new technology effectively. Learning new literacies can also help students personally, it can help them participate in the real world. Additionally, it is important to realize that the definition of new litaraces is constantly changing as the world is advancing. Lastly, using new literacies in the classroom enables the teacher to create diverse and differentiated instruction. New literacies opens the doors to many options of teaching effectively.
There are many pros and cons to teaching with new literacies. It is a great benefit to the students, they will learn better now and strive later in life as well. There are skills and strategies that are taught that are crucial to know in the real world. Teachers have the opportunity to teach much more effectively. It allows teachers to create differentiated lessons. The internet has a plethora of tools and resources that can help students learn. For the struggling and advanced students there is so much available. There are great activities that can help students review or practice what they have learned. Students are learning how to navigate through technology which is a crucial skill for their future. It is also a challenge for teacher. Many teachers have to completely redesign their curriculum to incorporate new literacies. Teachers must go through much training to be equipped and knowledgeable in these areas. It is important that teachers participate in trainings and courses often to refresh and update their knowledge of new literacies. Because new literacies change so rapidly, teachers must make sure they are constantly updating their curriculum. It requires extra work from the teacher but it is worth it. Technology is the means to the goal. Students are not learning solely from technology but it is the aid that that helps the students learn effectively.
